Synopsis: Creativity has everything to do with mindset – beware the zero-sum mindset.

Pause a moment longer to take a more considered look at it, and it’s easy to discern that creativity is always, always, always a multiplayer game too. Indeed this is fact doubly true. Not only are breakthrough creative ideas a result of an accumulation of many smaller ideas, but inevitably those many contributing ideas come from many contributors too, rather than some single, mythical, creative genius source. To punctuate the observation, consider that MacArthur Fellows, those famous creative folks who have the moniker of genius thrust upon them, are the quickest to tell you that, in the words of mathematician and Fellow Maria Chudnovsky, whatever they create rests on the broad shoulders of others before them, and that their greatest hope is that what they create will do the same for other people and other ideas yet to come. In short, the multiplayer nature of creativity is true both in any individual creation and across creations and time.

If all of this strikes you as somewhat self-evident, you might be asking yourself, why make the point? Considered in a thoughtful moment, the answer is just as clear, though in the current environment, all too easily missed. Our world is increasingly dominated by the short view, the quick answer, and the implicit goal of finality. On a growing list of subjects, we humans are also increasingly leaning towards not only an us versus them view, but strategy, a textbook zero-sum strategy where I must win, and you must lose, and together we fail to advance. At the very least, if our endeavor is a creative one, with this mindset we’re pretty much done before we even begin. But as zero-sum spreads to an ever-widening number of endeavors, it’s important to do the math. Inevitably, the conversation is about far more than pennies.

DivineCouncil.org at the Center

DivineCouncil.org is devoted solely to spiritual matters as I believe the essence of human nature (and the origin of physical reality) is spiritual.

DivineCouncil.org is a fully-featured website with a regularly updated article blog, an infrastructure to distribute theological materials to a large subscriber base, and a private forum that could run a large church.

The private forum on DivineCouncil.org provides extensive resource-sharing capabilities. The forum, alone, could serve a large mega-church with dozens of ministries (in fact, many websites with such a forum devote the entire site to the forum.) However, DivineCouncil.org’s forum is devoted to sharing and distributing theological resources, supporting missionaries, and facilitating conversations searchable by keyword & category.

Private threads are also available on the forum for planning, article critique and collaboration, and for matters not appropriate to the entire forum readership.

In short, DC’s forum is everything Facebook is not.

What They Have in Common

There are three things that all three websites have in common: a course library, a private forum, and a store.

Course Library

Given that all courses, regardless of subject, will be housed on OutliersAcademy.com the categories for McGillespie.com and DivineCouncil.org will inevitably spill over to OutliersAcademy.com when courses become available in their respective areas of focus.

Private Forum

The forum on DivineCouncil.org is expensive and requires considerable administration. For that reason, I’ll be leveraging the forum to support OutliersAcademy.com and McGillespie.com, as well. Please see the bottom of the forum on DivineCouncil.org to discuss articles or courses related to OutliersAcademy.com and McGillespie.com.

Online Store

The “Store” button on the menu of all three websites will take you to the online store for that website.

The store was installed to make it possible to sell digital downloads without having to update expiring links for security. However, there are lots of possibilities I’m looking forward to exploring.

Life Admin & Web Cockpit

I have two large computer screens in my office formed into a kind of life-administering cockpit. Between logos, writing tools, and all sorts of apps and gizmos that make it easier (read possible) to administer life and three fully-blown websites there’s usually something interesting on the screen.

Every once in a while a friend is in my office to discuss something in private, and they see something on the screen that prompts them to ask what I’m working on. While answering their questions I become aware, again, how extensive is the infrastructure that keeps my life on track, websites administered, and materials published for their respective purposes.

Everything is Easy?

Far from complaining, I find my work to be thrilling and a joy. However, I also know something about websites that most people don’t: the “cockpit” and tools on my screen are similar or identical to those on the desks of thousands of other website administrators. There are many great choices for tools “out there”, but the best of the breed are usually obvious. Equally well-known is how many tools (dozens or more) are necessary to accomplish the work and still carry on something of a normal life. And those knee-deep in using them know something else that need rarely be mentioned or discussed: The oft-heard advice that “having a website is easy” or “just throw it up online” or “my friend makes $10k a month on his blog and does almost nothing” is worse than bad; it’s defeating and destructive.

Just recently, I learned of a good man who was lured into a one SAS-(software as service)-does-all program for administering the totality of his business website needs. As of 2019, no such automated service can fulfill this promise. Such a promise can only be made (let alone fulfilled) by an actual person (or persons) doing the work. Yes–even in 2019– actual people still have to do the grunt work to keep a good website going; piece-by-piece, update-by-update, integration-by-integration, codemod-by-codemod, glitch-by-glitch, support-call-by-support call.

Automations like drip marketing are awesome, spreadsheets can do wonders, google drive is cool as long as it’s free, and there are lots of great courses out there to help. My new favorite beast(s) are Zapier integrations to take the drudgery out of inter-app coordination!  But, don’t be fooled: there’s still a SWAMP of technology to wade through to keep everything in place for a functional website that fulfills its purpose well.

Pro Tip: Before you start a website for your business (or pay for an automated do-all-service) ask, beg, or purchase the advice on everything it really takes from someone already doing it. . . .successfully.

3 Websites for Life!

In retrospect, the unfolding of these three websites (over ten years) was natural and inevitable. Now with the “birth” of OutliersAcademy.com, I have the same feeling with regards to websites as when our second child was born. There is an indescribable feeling of “completeness of platform.”

In 2019, I’m more committed than ever to nourishing my family … and these three websites … for life!

The best knife in the world is the one you’ll have with you when you need it.

And, just like The Best Gun in the World, the features of a knife you don’t have with you, don’t matter.

A knife may have been mankind’s first tool. A knife can make the difference between life and death although self-defense is not its primary use. There’s so many uses for a knife that it’s just plain sub-optimal to be without one, ever.

I prefer access to four types of knives, at all times:

  1. Kukri for chopping
  2. Full-Tang Hunting & Utility
  3. Multi-tool
  4. Folding knife

Access to all four is no problem around the house, if traveling by vehicle or in a group. All four are too much weight to carry on foot and alone.

The concept of “Best Knife” is to focus on what can be with you at all times. Given size, weight and bulk the only knife I can count on to have with me anytime, anywhere is a folding knife. None of the others can be tucked away in a tuxedo or a bathing suit.

A kukri, hunting knife and multi-tool are what I would bring to a survival situation. A folding knife is all I can expect to have when one occurs. Not having one makes it too likely I won’t have a knife, at all. With so many everyday (Sometimes urgent) uses for a knife I find that unacceptable.

Minimum Criteria

Modern technology enables the luxury of the following minimum attributes for a folding knife:

  • Solid Locking Blade
  • Hard, but not brittle Steel that holds an edge, has some rust resistance and doesn’t break or chip in tough circumstances.
  • Ambidextrous Open
  • Non-slip, hard, tough and lightweight handle
  • Deep carry clip (Accessible but not legally concealed)
  • Fits every wardrobe, comfortably
  • Easy to maintain
  • Fits your hand and can be held rock steady in tough use

Ambidextrous open is mandatory. Ambidextrous carry is not. I carry on the right side front pocket and have never needed to retrieve with the left hand. If I did then the deep carry clip and ambi open would save the day. Either hole or thumb studs are fine for ambi-open.

One should have to destroy the knife before the blade lock fails. How important are your fingers?

Blade materials are getting better all the time. While most steel HRC58 or greater will do I’ve had excellent results with ATS-34, 154CM, D2 and AUS-8 (And have read of extraordinary results with M2 and ZDP-189). ATS-34 and 154CM are metallurgic brothers. The D2 holds an edge better than ATS-34 and I hear M2 and ZDP-189 hold their edge even after the knife dulling exercise of cutting up a few dozen cardboard boxes. I’ve found that D2 and AUS-8 will rust when around salt water. Since my blades are black coated I sharpen’ that rust off.

The Best Knife in My World for the last 8 years is made of ATS-34 and I have no complaints. However, I’m always game to try new metals. My next folding knife will be made of either ZDP-189, M2 or D2 depending on price. The first two metals cost more because of the expense of the metal and the effort and equipment wear involved in the forging process.

I wouldn’t get fancy with handle shape. The closed knife must be flush with clothes and not stick or catch when retrieving.

The drop point tip is the most versatile with plenty of tip reinforcement for most work. Unless you’re stabbing cans or such all day there’s little need to give up cutting surface for a tanto point.

Zeroing in on Your Optimal

Less obvious attributes I’ve discovered optimal are:

  • Not so expensive you won’t use it or take risks with it.
  • Not so expensive you won’t replace it if lost.
  • Not so flashy it draws attention at social occasions.
  • Partially serrated (No more than 1-inch or so).

Optional, but nice to have is an overall length (When closed) that is 1-1.5 inches longer than your palm width. If so, it can be ‘palmed’ to apply blunt force as a hammer or as an alternative to the blade for self defense.

A knife is no place to skimp on quality. And yet, I’d rather have two that meet my criteria than one I’m afraid to use or lose.

My all black tool often goes unnoticed when used during social occasions. With the added advantages of corrosion resistance and salt-water protection I now insist on a black coated blade and handle for a folding knife that has to go everywhere.

That 1-inch of serration has saved me many times when primary blade dulls. I can still cut now and sharpen later which makes all the difference. I won’t give up cutting surface for a tanto tip, but, that 1-inch (Only) of serration has been a lifesaver.

In order to meet all the above criteria the Best Knife in My World needs to be:

  1. 3-4 inch Blade Length
  2. 5-6 inch Overall Length
  3. 6 ounces or less
  4. Black coated blade made from one of (ZDP-189, M2, D2, 154CM or ATS-34)
  5. Black handle – Tough, light, non-slip (G10 Works well)
  6. Drop point tip
  7. Partially serrated
  8. Solid locking blade
  9. Ambidextrous open
  10. Deep carry clip

Even if you tweak some values you’ve got a solid framework for deciding on Your Optimal Folding Knife. However, the most Optimal knife is not The Best Knife in Your World unless it’s in your pocket when you need it.

Settle on The Best Knife in Your World . . . sooner, rather than later. With so many everyday (Sometimes urgent) uses it may be no laughing matter that. . .

“The features of a knife you don’t have with you don’t matter.”

The QWERTY keyboard most people use was designed for the typewriter in the 1870’s. It’s named after the key sequence on the upper left of the keyboard.

There were no ‘typists’ before the typewriter, so, QWERTY was designed for the typewriter. Many key combinations caused the machine to jam so were placed on the new keyboard to slow them down. This was a good thing because untangling the levers was time consuming. Ironically, you could get more typing done by typing slower! Typists were also taught to strike the key hard and release quickly; another jam avoiding technique.

Today, there are no mechanical limits on typing yet most are using a keyboard designed to slow them down. The widespread use of computer keyboards provides the means to escape from this mechanical prison to whoever wants to be free. In fact, most of the typing world is a few clicks and a decision away from keyboard freedom.

And what does keyboard freedom look like?

It looks like typing as fast as you can think. It looks like being comfortable writing as long as you want. It looks like being able to type for the rest of your life with no arm or hand pain.

The Dvorak Keyboard

You probably have a QWERTY keyboard in front of you. Here’s what the Dvorak keyboard looks like:

Dvorak studied hand shape, letter frequencies and combinations and arranged the keyboard to minimize hand movement and maximize the speed of typing the most common letters and combinations.

For instance, the most frequently used letters in the English language are “ETAON RISHD LFCMU GYPWB VKXJQ Z” (In that order). The first 12 of these letters are used 80% of the time. Notice how 10 of those 12 letters are on the ‘home’ row of the keyboard. You can type thousands of complete words without even moving your hands off the ‘home’ row of the Dvorak keyboard!

Notice how all vowels are on the left side of the ‘home’ row (except for ‘y’) with consonants on the right. Since English words are mostly a pattern of Consonant | Vowel | Consonant | Vowel most words are formed with the letters typed by alternating hands like beating a drum. The most common letter pairs in English are “TH HE AN RE ER IN ON AT ND ST ES EN OF TE ED OR TI HI AS TO”. Looking at the Dvorak layout notice that those letters are either right next to each other or easily typed with alternating hands.

The hardest row to reach is the bottom row. That’s where Dvorak placed the least commonly used English letters. Dvorak also factored in right-handedness and ‘inboard stroke flow‘ (Think of the way we roll-tap fingers on a table top from the little finger to the index finger).

Other Dvorak Layouts

Using the same Dvorak principles there are also Left and Right one-handed keyboards, a layout for C programmers and a keyboard for most latin script based languages.

Reviewing the Options

For English and languages based on Latin script you have the following keyboard options:

  1. QWERTY -English or your language version.
  2. COLEMAN – ‘Improved’ QWERTY meant to ease retraining of QWERTY typists.
  3. Dvorak (English or your language version).
  4. Map your Own Keyboard Layout. – An interesting alternative now possible using Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator, KbdEdit or Keyman Developer.

(Non-Latin script languages like Chinese, Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Russian, etc. may have to Map their own keyboards if their default hasn’t been optimized).

My Take

QWERTY is not an option for me because it hurts my hands. The faster and longer I type the more it hurts. Coleman is a compromise meant to save on retraining QWERTY typists rather than optimize hand movement for language– No thanks. The idea of mapping my own keyboard layout is fascinating, but, I couldn’t improve on Dvorak and Dealey’s design; They were exhaustive and thorough in their quest to Optimize the keyboard for English.

Speed is One Thing

A fast typer can type as fast as they can think in words. Faster than that is useful for dictation and contests, I suppose. There are four non-speed benefits to optimizing keyboard layout:

  1. Comfort
  2. Long term injury avoidance
  3. Increased daily stamina (And no soreness)
  4. Increased lifetime stamina

Based on soreness near the end of my QWERTY days I’d be in trouble, today, if I hadn’t made the switch.

The Big Picture

Keyboard use is so widespread that almost every job requires it. The more keyboard use the more productivity gains to optimizing it for the user.

Writers, programmers, travel agents, secretaries, bloggers and publishers may get the biggest payoff. However, that list is growing as is the keyboards role in every day life.

Making the Switch

The Dvorak Keyboard is a button push away on on most computers. You change the setting in your preferences and “Voila” the keys are remapped. You don’t need to buy anything.

I switched to Dvorak five years ago because my hands hurt. As a piano player I was a very fast QWERTY typist and my hands ached and cramped at the end of long writing days. If I didn’t do something I would have been in trouble just when I needed to type more than ever.

Actually, Dvorak was not my first choice. Dragonfly was.

Dragonfly

Why type when you can talk?

They say it’s best to write like you talk. People complicate their written words and keep their spoken words simple. I also think more clearly when speaking than writing because of the person I’m talking with. Why not bypass writing, altogether, and go right to the spoken word to capture thoughts and let the computer do the work?

Dragonfly is great, but, it slowed the transition to Dvorak since there was less need to type. That’s not a complaint. I felt more comfortable making the switch to Dvorak because my dependency on the keyboard was less. I recommend that transition technique if you don’t mind learning both Dragonfly and Dvorak at the same time.

I stopped using Dragonfly because my aging Windows computer couldn’t run it and the Adobe Suite at the same time. Now that Microsoft has been banished from my life and a beautiful and powerful UNIX machine awaits Dragonfly will soon follow.

How Long Does It Take?

The websites and books on Dvorak say it only takes a few months. It took me six months. During the transition I was using Dragonfly to dictate most writing right onto the screen. Since I wasn’t typing as much there was less practice time on the ‘new’ Dvorak layout. Otherwise, it probably would have taken the normal two or three months.

Labels on the Keys?

I tried putting labels on the keys, but, found it confusing. When logging into the computer the default keyboard is QWERTY. It doesn’t switch to Dvorak until it boots up and reads your preferences. Therefore, you have to type your password using QWERTY. Having the Dvorak labels on the keys made password entry confusing. I took the labels off and printed out a reference diagram for Dvorak forcing myself to find the keys by looking at the diagram. You have to type without looking at the keys to gain any speed. Why not skip the crutch of looking at the keys right off the bat?

What about Phone Keyboards?

Many people wonder if I get confused when using the keyboards on phones since they are all QWERTY. No, not at all. In fact, I prefer that phones have QWERTY because I can visually find the QWERTY keys faster than Dvorak!

Dvorak is in my muscle memory and QWERTY is in my visual memory. That reads much more confusing than it feels. When typing I never look at the keys; I just feel where the letters are. Since the letters are in the Dvorak layout those are where I ‘feel’ the letters. Without the Dvorak labels my keyboard is still, visibly, QWERTY. When tying in my password in the morning to login I look at the keyboard.

What About Using Other Computers?

99% of the time you use your own computer. If you need to use another computer (And the owner lets you!) just temporarily change the keyboard setting. When you’re done switch it back.

I still hunt and peck in QWERTY faster than many can type. However, I have to take my hands off the keyboard and look at the keys. I was a touch QWERTY typist so memory of the keys is still there. What I’ve lost is the muscle memory of QWERTY. My muscle memory is now Dvorak.

It ‘feels’ similar to being bilingual. The idea of knowing two words for everything is only hard to imagine for someone who has not yet learned a second language.

Nobody Wants to Use My Computer!

People start typing on my computer and can’t figure out what’s ‘wrong’ with it. My wife won’t even do quick web searches, technical support frowns, friends shake their heads . . . everybody hates it.

And I love it!

Anything that keeps people off my computer is a good thing. It adds another layer of security for snoops in places where they don’t belong.

Going From Hard to Easy

You may think switching to Dvorak is going from something easy to something hard. That’s backwards: Going from QWERTY to Dvorak is going from something hard to something easy. Sure, the transition will take some effort and probably shouldn’t be done in the middle of a project. However, thereafter your life will be easier, not harder. That goes double if you’re a writer or depend on the keyboard for your work.

Good Reasons to Delay the Switch

After using Dvorak for five years I recommend considering it for Your Optimal Keyboard in English. It’s hard to imagine QWERTY being Optimal in this age of computers unless:

  • Your job requires using many different keyboards not under your control.
  • You must use a dumb terminal that’s not switchable.
  • You share your primary computer with someone not open to switching.
  • You’re in the middle of a pressing project and are waiting for things settle down before making the switch (Referring to a project here, not life).

Otherwise, save your hands and increase your productivity: Either switch to Dvorak or Roll Your Own . . . .

Rolling Your Own

The optimal keyboard layout is specific to the language. Dvorak was originally developed for English after exhaustive studies of language use. To reach the Dvorak level of Optimal in your language would require the same exhaustive studies. This work has already been done in Latin script languages. But, if you’re not satisfied then there’s never been an easier time to roll your own.

Computer now have the option of using any keyboard mapping you’d like. Marcus Brooks has some great tips if you’re interested in developing your own keyboard layout.

Practice makes permanent, not perfect. How and what you practice determines what is made permanent.

The saying should be, “Perfect practice makes perfect” though I prefer the word “Optimal”. Perfection is a neurotic goal whereas Optimal is possible within the limits of strengths, weaknesses, values, goals and purpose.

Fine, so how does one practice optimally? One of life’s ironies is that we’re least able to practice optimally when first starting to learn. And, what’s practiced first has a dramatic impact; good or bad.

The Perfect Swing

A golf swing is among the most complex and elegant feats the human body can perform. Having rarely picked up a club I read “Search for the Perfect Swing” before learning to play golf. The book taught me what a perfect golf swing looked like from many vantage points. The more I read the more I wanted to play. So, after reading the book I took a few lessons and, with the help of a pro, bridging the gap between mind and body was a joy!

Playing golf is now fun, not torture. A lot of this has to do with getting off to an Optimal start:

  1. I was interested, but, detached from the urgency of having to “Get started right away”.
  2. The book “spoke my language” covering the subject from many angles and vantage points.
  3. The lessons were efficient because concepts and language were understood. The instructor was freed up to show how to physically swing the club rather than explain language, lingo or why he was leading me in certain directions.
  4. I had no qualms about looking bad, seeking help or taking instruction from a pro.
  5. Distinctions between what felt natural and what were optimal techniques were made from the start. The danger here is that what feels natural is mistaken for optimal instead of just easy. As I learned from playing the guitar what comes natural or “easy” is only one component of what is truly optimal technique.

While better golfers struggle to remove bad habits from their swing, without messing up the whole, I have the luxury of building on an optimal foundation. The few times I get to play are truly enjoyable.

Preparation vs. “Just Do It”

People say, “Don’t think about it, just do it!” as if offering brilliant insight. In fact, advising action without thought is terrible advice, especially, if you don’t know what you’re doing.

A three second delay before “Just speaking” saves a world of hurt. The same goes for thought before action. A little thought before “Just doing it” saves time and may save the effort of undoing, redoing or repairing what wasn’t done right the first time.

Let’s say you’re moving to a new house and loading all your possessions into a truck. While others are mapping out the space you just grab things and start loading them. No need to get “bogged down in the details”, you say, “Just cut to the chase and start loading!” You’re brilliant . . . .until you run out of space or start breaking things. Now you have to unload the truck, map out the space, reload the truck and repair/replace the broken items. Gee, I guess “Anything worth doing is worth doing twice”!

Imagine the same mistake in learning how to play golf. How hard (Or impossible) will it be to unlearn and remove bad habits from muscle and bone because you didn’t waste time learning the fundamentals and just jumped right in and got started!

Diligence vs. Insanity

If practice makes perfect then diligence leads only to perfection. But, diligence, alone, could just as well lead to insanity. If what you’re practicing is flawed, or mechanically wrong, diligence could halt, reverse or permanently degrade performance and make expertise impossible.

Diligence is an admirable quality after you’re clear on the fundamentals of what you’re being diligent about.

Optimal Feels Unnatural, at First

When learning a new skill there’s a tendency to mistake what feels natural with what’s optimal. What feels natural, at first, is usually just what’s easy. And what comes easy is rarely optimal in terms of long term technique. Learning to play the guitar is a good example.

When you pick up a guitar and hold it “Naturally” neither the left or right hands fall into the optimal positions. In fact, when shown how to place the hands, correctly, the first thing people say or think is “This hurts!” It not only feels unnatural, it hurts. Nobody would put their hands in the correct guitar positions “Naturally”. And yet, as painful as the optimal playing position is, at first, it’s the only way to avoid long term damage to your hands and master the instrument. Get it wrong at the beginning and you’ll pay, pay, pay every time you play.

Going by what we “Feel” is usually an excuse to do what’s easy. And what comes easy is only optimal after gaining expertise. What’s easy, at first, may be a disaster in the long term.

Self-Taught is No Badge of Honor

What’s so great about being Self-Taught? Tiger Woods is a natural born golfer and he isn’t self-taught. So, what’s the brag about?

Being self-taught is ok for things around the house or supporting skills incidental to your work. For important skills, however, it’s no badge of honor unless:

  • You don’t care enough about the activity to put effort or time into it.
  • You don’t want to spend money on training.
  • It’s not a long term interest for you.
  • It’s not important enough to make a fuss about.

There’s nothing wrong with any of this if the skill is trivial. For important skills, however, throw the badge of self-taught in the trash. All it takes, nowadays, is watching a DVD, reading a book or watching videos on the web to get started on the right foot.

The Benefits May be Indirect

Slowing down to prepare or practice the right habits into muscle and bone could pay huge dividends. Ironically, the dividends may go into different skill than the one you’re learning. That’s because doing one thing well has a lot in common with doing anything well. The optimal characteristics, behaviors, look, feel and approach to optimizing one thing parlays into everything you do.

In a previous article about expert marksmanship I ask:

“What profession or task would not benefit from the discipline and precision required to become a Rifleman?

  • What about adjusting your sights is not transferable to adjusting a miter saw?

A Modern Jumpstart

Having so much information at our fingertips is a big help when it comes to learning new skills. Before engaging in serious practice why not:

  • Do a web search to find experts who communicate well about their expertise.
  • Watch Youtube videos of experts.
  • Order and watch Training DVDs.
  • Checkout Lynda.com for a huge library of software training.
  • Find books written by experts who speak simply and teach well.

We often hear adults remark that “Kids today know so much more than I did at their age”. That’s probably true. But, they have to. There’s two billion more people on the planet than when I was a kid. When learning skills to contribute and compete it’s more important than ever to practice foundational skills correctly, from the start.

Personal Examples – Good and Bad

Here’s some personal examples of skills and activities I practiced well from the beginning and some that I didn’t.

Good

  • Golf – The book Search For The Perfect Swing: The Proven Scientific Approach To Fundamentaly Improving Your Game came along at the perfect time and seemed to have been written just for me. It saved me from frustrations that would have made me give up the game. Instead, I enjoy getting a little better each time I play. That’s all I care about with golf because it’s the people, outdoors and elegance of the game that I enjoy.
  • Flying – I found a natural born pilot passionate about the art and craft of flying. He was not shy about being hard on me, when needed. Also, unlike many flying students I stuck with the same instructor for most of the hours required to earn the general pilots license. That’s important because getting familiar with multiple teaching ‘styles’ is an obstacle to most flying students. Another part of optimizing flying practice from the start was the wealth of DVD training videos on every aspect of flying. Not spending money on them would have been very expensive.
  • Guitar – My parents found the best teachers right off the bat for me. I still marvel at the awkward habits ingrained into many guitar players who weren’t as lucky.
  • Piano – Already an accomplished guitar player, choosing a good piano teacher came naturally.
  • Handgun Shooting – Another example of the optimal grip feeling anything but natural, at first. Through books, DVDs, youtube videos and a friend who is a Federal law enforcement trainer the stance and grip that now feels natural was put into place with Optimal instruction.

Bad

  • Motorcycling – Early dirt bike riding was a good start because I crashed more often and learned from each one. However, street bike riding is a zero crash high risk scenario. I commuted by motorcycle for seven years, but, had no idea what I didn’t know until being clued in by a friend. Better late than never, I suppose. The book “Proficient Motorcycling” would have been perfect to read before any street bike riding.
  • Weight Lifting – Everybody thinks they know what they’re doing and almost nobody really does. My early weightlifting was fraught with bad form, working out too many days a week, too many repetitions and no idea how to recover other than eating lots of chicken and eggs and sleeping all day. Ridiculous and nothing but bumping into obstacles and moving backwards.
  • Rifle Shooting – My dad was great in getting us out into the woods to shoot and being safe about it. He also taught us good trigger technique. However, my brother and I were clueless when it came to holding the rifle, using a sling to stabilize, lining up the sights or learning about anything but our pellet guns and his .22LR. I’m not complaining because he probably taught us more than most dads. However, I wish there had been something like the Appleseed Project back then.

Elegance is Worth The Effort

As you progress into mastery the conscious mind no longer has to focus on fundamentals if they’re practiced well from the beginning. The mind is freed up to focus on overall performance. Sometimes it’s the elegant details and sometimes its the context of the performance. These could turn out to be the most beautiful or critical aspects of your performance. Both are worth the effort of optimizing from the start.

Either make a list or work on someone else’s. Be deployed or get deployed.

It’s that simple. What’s hard to grasp is how small steps, decisions and work accumulate over time, multiply and lead to freedom. And, yes, I’m bypassing “Self-Employment” and going right to the heart of the matter. State conjured terms don’t lead to a purposeful life. The truth shall set us free and it begins with precise language.

People who’ve done it know that deploying yourself is a project that can’t be checked off as done. There’s always something needed to keep it going. Through it all . . . one thing matters most: The next thing. The next thing is never so critical than when it’s the first thing. So, say a prayer and align your being and talents with the Creator of all things . . . and then make a list and get to work. That’s what Self-Deployment is. The first 100 steps are the hardest. Here’s the first 20 to optimize your trajectory.

Bet they’re not what your think.

20 Ways to Self-Deploy

  1. Find or create a place where you can think clearly. Bring a notebook, pen and ten bucks to get a cup of tea, snack or whatever else keeps you from concentrating. If you have a desk at home then . . . .
  2. Clean up your desk – Until it doesn’t distract you anymore.
  3. Make a list of everything you have to do until you can’t think of anything else. If you’re returning to this list from a previous session do this step again until your mind is clear.
  4. Write down everything you can’t get off your mind. Anything you can’t stop thinking about is eligible. Keep writing even if it takes all the time you have available. If you’re returning to this list from a previous session do this step again until your mind is clear.
  5. If you get stuck or overwhelmed go workout at the gym. That’s it, you’re done for the day. Don’t feel bad. This is the best thing you could possibly do to get unstuck for tomorrow or later.
  6. If you already have an idea –Brainstorm. – It’s no good to move on to the next step if you can’t wait to write everything down about a new business idea. Who knows? It may just be the one! But, hold back that judgment for now.
  7. Get organized – Build the Ark before the flood. If you’re scattered now it only gets worse. All this this purging and brainstorming tends to overwhelm personal organization. Start improving your system now. Ideas are the fuel of the freedom machine. Learn how to capture and organize them. GTD may be the optimal place to get started..
  8. Learn How to Discover Your Life Purpose in About 20 Minutes. Purpose is key to everything even if you don’t know what yours are, yet. Nobody wants to climb to the top of a ladder only to find it’s resting against the wrong building.
  9. Understand Your Optimal Equation– This is how the big picture fits together. Knowing your purpose is the best way to start. However, even when you do other variables of your life can still drag you down. The more self-knowledge you have about the complete range of your strengths, weaknesses, values, goals and purpose the better chance you have at optimizing the work you do in any environment. For now, move on to discovering you strengths.
  10. Build on your strengths. Purchase and read StrengthsFinder 2.0 to discover your strengths. If you want to move forward without the benefit of the book then go ahead and attempt to list them all out. I recommend the book, however, because it’s hard to recognize our own strengths.
  11. Learn How to Find Work in Any EconomySee if any of those jobs interest you. If they do, can you provide those services as a business instead of working a job? If so, then vett that business after you . . .
  12. Learn How to Vett Any Business Idea in 20 Minutes or Less
  13. Create a Bucket List. We all have one. The only difference between you and everyone else is that you’re going to write yours down. Want to climb the pyramids? Dive the Great Barrier Reef? Fly your own helicopter?
  14. List every Life Goal you have. Unlike your bucket list, these are personal development milestones, levels of expertise, accredidations, states of being that provide inner satisfaction.
  15. Create a Not To-Do List. – This is a great technique to free up the time needed to work yourself free. If you’re currently working a job then you need all the little snippets of time you can get your hands on.
  16. Cut Back to The Essentials. Make a list of all expenses you could cut to make your life easier. Be brutal. By now you know that nothing matters more than freedom. Let go of all the crap costing money you could use to get free. Don’t make others free in exchange for things you don’t need. Get back to basics and Tools that multiply your productivity.
  17. Take a Little Trip – Not even at step 20 and I’ll bet your exhausted. These ‘little’ steps pack a punch. Alright, forget about everything and take a little trip off your beaten path. Go feed the ducks at the pond or ice skate around them. Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream. Don’t come back until you stop giggling for no reason.
  18. SELL what you can, DONATE what you will and TRASH the rest. Trash everything you don’t need. List what you could sell to free up space, clutter, maintenance and money. Look in your garage. Stuff you don’t use is expensive in more ways than one.
  19. Outsource your weaknesses. Yeah, I know you can’t afford it. Be creative. Swap services with a buddy. Anybody from church need a place to stay for the summer? Offer a college student a part time job for room and board. Honey, can you do me a favor? etc., etc. . . .
  20. Use your job to break free. Purchase and read The 4-Hour Workweek. This is a great tool if you’re trying to work yourself free of a job.

What, no business plan? Uhhhhm, those are for getting others to loan you money.  By step 21 you’ll be on your way to creating money . . . but that’s a topic for another day. Work on one or two of these per day until they’re all done. On the way to completing the first 20 you’ll map out the first 100 or more. Those are the hardest, remember? If you lose your way repeat these rather haunting two sentences to yourself:

You know that feeling you get when you’re driving to the airport and realize you forgot your passport?

I haven’t had that feeling in years. . . . thanks to my father’s travel list and his son’s obsession with lists.

My father traveled a lot for business and made a travel checklist so he wouldn’t forget things. We had fun brainstorming on worthy additions (Rarely subtractions) to the list. It got to the point where he never forgot to pack anything. Now its gone way beyond that and my father would get a kick out of how his list has evolved.

The latest Travel List has been improved over the last 20 years. It now has 300+ items and covers just about every trip imaginable. I’ve recently added items for family, camping, international and kids travel. There’s also some 50 simple tasks to do before and after a trip to make it easier, safer, save money, and put me at ease while traveling.

Beyond Forgetting

Not forgetting things is only the most obvious benefit to using the travel list. Here are some other bene’s:

  • Removes mental clutter and maintains focus while packing.
  • Makes packing easier, more fun and quicker.
  • Reduces the stress of trip preparation.
  • Enables packing far in advance of trip.
  • Enables light travel while getting more out of items packed.
  • Takes the stress out of unexpected trips.
  • Enables focus on destination specific details.
  • Frees up time to help less prepared family members pack.
  • Enables you to delegate trip preparation tasks to family members.
  • Enables you to focus on completing nagging projects (not related to your trip) that you want to complete prior to being gone.
  • Standardizes your approach to trip preparation.
  • Makes you more ready and willing to take spontaneous trips.
  • Makes you more likely to travel to places you’ve always wanted to go.
  • Sets your mind at ease that all bases are covered at home and work so you can enjoy your trip.
  • Minimizes the tasks you’ll need to do upon your return.

That’s a lot of bang to get out of one list!

Less is Enough

Space is in short supply when traveling. You pay money for the small space you occupy on the plane, each checked bag, your hotel room, etc.. You also pay dearly in effort and hassle for the weight and size of everything you have to lug around, secure, insure, keep track of and maybe even replace.

If ever there’s an occasion when you need to do more with less its when traveling.

Ironically, the longer your travel list the more comfortable you’ll be in bringing less! Now that anxiety about forgetting travel items is no longer a problem how about leaving things behind on purpose? With more than you could ever need listed out in front of you make informed decisions about what not to take. Come up with techniques and strategies to:

  • Use items in multiple ways.
  • Find smaller versions.
  • Bring disposable items that get thrown away before returning.
  • Purchase at a convenience store at the destination.
  • Share common items with a travel mate.
  • Wash key clothing items at you destination rather than bringing multiple versions.
  • Keep a travel bag at a friends house at your destination.

By Air

When traveling by air my goal is to take as few items as possible. Ideally, I don’t even check a bag. That boils down to one small travel backpack (SAK, makes a nice one) and one carry-on bag. The backpack is so small that most people don’t even see it. You’ll be doing me a favor to not refer to it as a man purse.

By Car

When traveling by car I’m a lot more survival oriented and tend to go overboard. Now that my wife and child are in the car I feel more protective. Soon, however, I’ll be able to expertly scale back. My goal is to scale back to less items while improving on utility.

The question is: What is optimal for this trip? Part of that answer is that optimal, when traveling, usually means bringing less.

For the “Don’t Need a List” People

I know who you are. My wife is one of you.

My wife thinks I’m a little nuts with my travel list. “What do you need that thing for?”, she used to say, “It’s all just common sense!”

Now, even my wife asks me to print the list for her when:

  1. She’s tired.
  2. She’s busy.
  3. Her trip comes up suddenly.
  4. The purpose of her trip changes drastically.
  5. The trip destination is unusual.
  6. She has too many non-travel related projects to work on before she leaves!

To put this in perspective you should know that Isabel is an expert traveler by any definition. Her trips are international and usually to multiple countries where knowledge of the language is limited. And, she has a remarkable talent for keeping details in her head. Keeping the same amount of detail in my head would cause goo to drip out of my ears.

Let’s put it this way for all the “Don’t Need a List” people out there: The six reasons that my wife will use a travel list are the best real life example I could ever show to “One of your kind”.

Actually, if you can keep that much detail in your head then think of what you could do with Travel list in front of you! Use that brainpower for more glamorous achievements than packing!

For the Sophisticated

You can always just get in the car and drive with a credit card in your pocket and the shirt on your back. But, how sophisticated is it to extol the benefits of traveling light when you make your first turn and start worrying about all the things you don’t have.

Have fun interrupting the fun parts of your trip to shop at the store for toothpaste (If you can find a store). Or worse, what if your business mission is in jeopardy because your only copy of the presentation is on your secretaries computer. She’d send it to you, but, the server just crashed.

For the Creative

The more basic ingredients you have on hand the less creative you have to be about not having them.

But, guess what? You won’t be less creative. Your creative efforts will just go further because you’ll have more basic ingredients that can be used for things that cannot be anticipated (Think apollo 13 and the carbon monoxide filter they had to build out of raw materials in the capsule).

In other words, just because you may have paper towels doesn’t mean you’ll be using it as a paper towel. It may be used as a coffee filter, dust mask, fire starter or water sponge (Gee how creative you can be when you have things to be creative with.).

Creativity is another form of excess capacity. Just like I say to the people who can store lots of details in their head: Fantastic! Now, how about using that ability for something greater than packing badly.

Most Likely to be Forgotten

  1. Things in the fridge.
    1. Vitamins
    2. Drinks
    3. Baby bottles
    4. Wine
  2. Support materials for incomplete “B” projects.
  3. Change of plans at last minute changes your needed support materials.
  4. Cell phone & charger.
    1. Because you left it charging.
    2. Because you packed the cell phone too early and forgot about charger.
  5. Things you don’t have the right container for.
  6. Information written on pieces of paper scattered around your house.
  7. Backups and copies of documents you need to perform admin tasks on the road.
  8. CD’s or DVD left in the drive in your computer
  9. Project files for any projects to be performed “On the road”.

Sometimes, traveling companions are so disorganized that you spend all your time helping them pack and forget your own stuff. Parents should be especially prepared for this as things they forget have consequences for the entire family. YO Travel List will help you get on top of your own packing to minimize the da mange of sort of thing.

Field Experience

When you start traveling with a list it makes you more aware of which items are truly useful. Since traveling is an extension of living it’s possible to find yourself wanting or needing just about anything. Thankfully, the practical aspects of traveling place natural limits on the infinite items that could make it onto your list. Here’s a few conclusions I’ve drawn through lots of time spent “In the Field”.

  • There are many items I rarely use but am still glad to have: Antibiotic cream, compass, many of the survival tin items (Though its surprising how many times I need to use something in the tin), lighter, spare glasses. Even items not used are worthwhile if they remove anxiety or if having them would prevent an emergency.
  • Small items are worth taking even if you don’t use them. They prevent late night in-convenience store runs or may be just plain annoying not to have. Think aspirin, tissue, dental floss, lip balm,etc..
  • Bring the travel list with you. This is especially useful for unexpected trips. The list enables you to buy stuff at the airport or at your destination. It will also make you aware of exactly what you don’t have that’s important for this unexpected trip.
  • Keep your master travel list on your phone AND accessible by internet in a jam.
  • I usually need only one book as reading material. If I finish it then it provides an opportunity to read something I normally wouldn’t.
  • Reference cards are a great source of reading material. Spanish vocabulary, Knot cards, first aid summaries. Anything I’m interested in studying that might have a laminated summary card is a compact way to learn and travel light.
  • DK books are excellent and compact source of all things local to your destination. They have local maps, amenities, hospitals, hotels, restaurants and on and on and on.
  • Knowledge of destination leads to less things to pack.
  • Knowing people at the destination leads to less things to pack.
  • Ability to improvise leads to less things to pack.
  • Taking items that perform multiple uses leads to less things to pack (Wave multi-tool, rag, tissue).
  • Leave space for purchases in your suitcase. A suitcase 3/4 full provides room for souvenirs.

Do I Have to use Categories?

No, you don’t have to use categories. I used the list without categories for a long time. I only started grouping things into categories when I got married. That’s when things got more complicated and more responsibilities leave less time to prepare.

In case you didn’t notice –the paragraph above is a backdoor recommendation to use categories. Ok, I feel your pain. Please hear me out. Categories:

  1. Encourage you to store items in your house by usage.
  2. Make you aware of where things go while packing.
  3. Make it easier to unpack when you get home
  4. Make your travel list more visually appealing and easier to work from.
  5. Get you thinking in terms of space and context rather a bombardment of item after item.
  6. Encourage you to brainstorm on other items in the same category you might have missed.
  7. Separate tasks from things on your list making it easier to delegate trip preparation to other family members.

I’ve made my own Optimal choices for categories. I put a key identifier in front of the task or item so they are grouped and sorted at the press of a button. There are lots of options for categories:

  • Type of travel
  • Place item is kept
  • Place item is packed
  • Where item is carried
  • Usage category
  • Activity based

Try mine out and see if you like them. If you don’t its time to experiment with your own. Just make sure the key in front is unique so it sorts and groups well in your word processor.

B – Before Packing

Almost all my “Packing” time is spent working on what I call “B” items. “B” stands for “Before Leaving”. They are tasks or projects –not items to pack. Many of them relate to the trip, however, most of my efforts go towards projects I want to get done before leaving. These fall into three categories:

  1. Projects that must be completed before leaving.
  2. Projects I want to be completed to feel better about leaving.
  3. Projects much easier completed now than when I return.

Work on all three categories make the trip more stress free and relaxing.

“B” items are the true “Work” of traveling. Taken all together, they are the real reason people dread (Avoid, postpone, Never get around to) traveling. They are also the most under appreciated and complex part of leaving the house. Smoothing out this phase of trip preparation will go a long way towards making you want to travel, again.

Strangely, I hear comments from friends that “It takes you a long time to pack”. That’s because I refer to any work on “B” projects as “Packing” to minimize interruptions leading up to departure. After my friends read this article that trick will no longer work for me. But, it will still work for you so give it a try.

Travel is a great excuse to impose deadlines on nagging projects. As any writer will tell you “Deadlines” don’t kill you when you cross them. They’re more likely to set you free.

Packing Tidbits

It’s best to check an item off your list only when it is:

  1. Placed into a bag that won’t be left behind.
  2. Put in the car (For car trips only).
  3. Put into the pockets of the clothes you’ll be wearing when you leave.
  4. On your key ring.
  5. In your pocket survival tin.
  6. “Done” if its a task or project.
  • Work off one list only!
  • Consider a bag full when it’s 3/4’s full. That will make items easier to retrieve and leave space for souvenirs.
  • Place packed bags by the door or in the car.
  • Pack car trip bags for easy retrieval of commonly needed items on the road.
  • While packing the car for a road trip create a ‘cockpit’ around driver to make things easy to retrieve safely while driving without having to pull over and stop.
  • Add any new items or tasks you thought of while packing to your master travel list. If you think of them while traveling e-mail or leave a phone msg to yourself to add later.

Gentleman’s Travel CheckList

Instructions

The list is the simplest component of travel preparation. Although the Travel List is the result of years of brainstorming –how you use the list is more important than the list, itself.

Once you get it down the list prep will take only 5 minutes. The rest of the time will be spent packing or getting non-travel related projects done before your trip. Don’t be put off by the detail in the steps. I have to be specific for those going through the process for the first time.

  1. Paste the whole list into word
  2. Change categories, if necessary, but keep each prefix unique.
  3. Consolidate all lists for this trip into this list
  4. Categorize any new items added.
  5. Use Word to Sort the entire list by Alphanumeric A-Z (Which will group all categories together).
  6. Now, delete all items not applicable for this trip (Which will probably cut list in half).
  7. Going through the list probably made you think of destination specific items. Add these items to the list while they’re fresh on your mind.
  8. Going through the list probably made you think of things you have to do before leaving. Add these tasks/projects to the list with a “B” prefix.
  9. If any items you thought of in 7. or 8. are general items then add them to your master travel list for the next trip.
  10. Delegate any “B” items that could possibly be better accomplished by someone else. Change any delegated items to “BD”.
  11. Go through list again and delete items not needed for this trip.
  12. You list is probably much shorter now. Using Word, select all and then format the list into two or three columns with a goal of getting all remaining items on one page.
  13. Print out the resulting list. If greater than one page then print on both sides so entire list is on one sheet of paper.
  14. Keep that one sheet of paper with you while you run errands. Check items off list as they get done. Consider giving a copy to family members with their delegated items. Add any general items you think of to this list and transfer to master list for next trip.

Last, but, not least my father would be disappointed if I didn’t leave you with his favorite travel tip. While your walking out the door leave one bag behind!

I used to love chewing gum. Something about it is soothing. I’m one of those who keeps their hands busy tying knots, flipping coins, throwing a yo-yo or rolling chinese yin-yang balls. Chewing gum hits that spot when hands aren’t free.

Yeah, the sugar in the gum is bad, but, it beats a cigarette all day long.

Back to the Good Ole’ Days

As unappealing as some of the ingredients are these were the good old days:

It all came to an end for me with the invasion of the the pink, blue and yellow stuff lovingly called sugar substitutes:

  • Pink is Sweet & Low which is saccharin where anthranilic acid successively reacts with nitrous acid, sulfur dioxide, chlorine, and then ammonia to yield saccharin (Yummy!).
  • Blue is Equal which is aspartame derived from the amino acids L-aspartic acid and L-phenylalanine and breaks down into formaldehyde, formic acid and DKP (Ghostly delicious!).
  • Yellow is Splenda which is dextrose, maltodextrin and sucrose where food chemists substitute chlorine atoms for three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sucrose molecule (Why chew water when you can slurp down chlorine?).

Turns out the Blue stuff lost market share to the yellow stuff because the yellow stuff still tastes sweet when heated. Guess it’s back to the drawing board for the blue team.

Sugar substitutes, like stevia, are good for diabetes, hypertension and obesity. Stevia doesn’t cause an insulin spike like sugar and is a near perfect solution to the obscene amount of sugar consumed by the average person. But, the calorie cutting aspect of sugar substites in gum is trivial. Most people burn the 15 calories of sugar in a stick of gum in the very act of chewing it.

Can there be any doubt that sugar is the more healthy choice among these Frankenstein sugar creatures?

Xylitol to the Rescue?

Xylitol. That’s the sweet stuff that gets rid of harmful bacteria in the mouth, right?

Gee, maybe it does kill harmful bacteria in the mouth. But, not so fast. According to Dr. Jim Humphries many dogs have died of liver disease as a result of xylitol poisoning. He advises keeping children’s chewable vitamins and candies (Ok for the kids, you see) away from dogs.

As for humans, Dr. Russell Blaylock says studies have shown that xylitol can cause damage to brain cells in his September 2008 Blaylock Wellness Report.

Without delving further I think it’s IX-NAY on the Xylitol-NAY.

SteviaDent?

Awesome: A gum sweetened with the natural herb Stevia. What could be better?

SteviaDent has Xylitol in addition to stevia extract.

Other Ingredients in SteviaDent: maltitol, gum base (i.e. original latex from sapodilla trees), xylitol, natural flavoring (peppermint oil, menthol), gum arabic, lecithin, glycerin, carnauba wax, beeswax.

Bubblelicious Burst?

Better than most, but, what’s up with the BHT? BHT and BHA prevent rancidity at the expense of being carcinogenic for the gum chewer.

INGREDIENTS: Sugar, Glucose Syrup, Gum Base, Invert Sugar, Water, Artificial and Natural Flavoring, Soy Lecithin, Glycerin, Corn Oil, Red 40 Lake, BHT (to maintain freshness) and Red 40.

Come On, Bazooka!

Now, we’re talking. For me, Bazooka is the very symbol of the good ole’ days. Surely they just kept stamping out this classic bubble gum and we can pop one for a trip back in the time machine?

Ingredients for Bazooka:
Sugar, gum base, corn syrup, natural and artificial flavors, citric acid, softeners, red 40 lake, red 40, BHT (preservative).

Yikes! Foiled again. Hey, I was just a kid. For all I know it always had BHT.

Peelu

You may have seen this one at the health food stores. I opted out because of the Titanium Dioxide.

Ingredients: Sugar, Chewing Gum Base, Glucose, Corn Syrup, Glycerine, Gelatine, Sucrose Fatty Acid Ester, Ginseng Extract, Ginseng Powder, D-Sorbitol, Licorice, Peppermint Flavor, Propylene Glycol, Persimmon Juice Concentrated.

Note the corn syrup, propylene glycol and sucrose fatty acid ester and keep it away from your pregnant wife.
