Venezuela’s socialist nightmare is almost over. The questions of when and how it ends—hopefully without more bloodshed—are already giving way to thoughts of what comes next. How does a nation brought low by socialism recover? Answer: Liberty!

Any blueprint for recovery must begin by learning the lessons of the past twenty years. They are legion. Here are the big ones:

  1. Socialism neither is nor has any theory of wealth creation. It is focused purely on consumption. It assumes that somebody, somehow, somewhere will create the stuff its advocates will seize and redistribute. That’s a dead end, as millions of Venezuelans now know.
  2. Socialism concentrates power in the hands of the few. It attracts the easily corrupted and corrupts them further. It appeals to the worst in people: envy, dependency, and deceitfulness.
  3. Socialists are demagogues. They divide society into classes and set them up to wage war against each other, knowing that they (the socialists) will become the center of power, attention and wealth as the rest of society is impoverished.
  4. Socialism is a disaster in both spiritual and material terms. It’s fueled by perpetual anger and victimology. It strips the individual of his dignity and his self-reliance. It boasts that it can plan his life and his economy for him but leaves devastation and misery in its wake.

It’s long past time for Venezuela to toss this evil failure into history’s garbage truck so it can be hauled away. Venezuela can do so much better. It can teach the world a great deal in the process. Venezuelans have suffered much and they must ensure that their suffering is not pointless or in vain.

The painful 20 years of the Chavez/Maduro dictatorship underscore the wisdom of these words of economist Ludwig von Mises:

A man who chooses between drinking a glass of milk and a glass of a solution of potassium cyanide does not choose between two beverages; he chooses between life and death. A society that chooses between capitalism and socialism does not choose between two social systems; it chooses between social cooperation and the disintegration of society.

No More Poison. No More Socialism.

To those who say the injuries of Venezuela are simply too severe to expect anything but a long, slow recuperation, I say, nonsense! The right approach can lift the country to its feet and produce amazing progress in the first year. What will be known in a decade as “the Venezuelan Economic Miracle” can begin immediately.

Two models from the 20th Century point the way—Germany and Hong Kong.

Freer trade led to a historic rebound that surprised almost everybody.

After World War II and a generation of socialism, Germany was in utter ruins in the late 1940s: defeated, devastated, occupied and demoralized. But by 1960, it was the economic powerhouse of Europe. Why? Because the free market policies of Ludwig Erhard, as explained here, provided the proper framework.

Socialism was dismantled, people and markets were liberated. Incentives in the form of lower tax rates, abolition of price controls, a sound currency, and freer trade led to a historic rebound that surprised almost everybody.

At the same time half a globe away, similar policies worked wonders in Hong Kong, thanks to the efforts of John James Cowperthwaite, as I detailed here. Cowperthwaite eliminated tariffs, slashed tax rates, opened Hong Kong for private enterprise and the results stunned the world. The colony vaulted from an impoverished backwater to one of the richest corners of Asia. It was liberty that did it, just the opposite of socialism.

Socialism offers no such miracles in its entire sordid history. None. Nothing even remotely close. Call it capitalism, free enterprise, or whatever you want, but it works. It bakes the bigger pie that people need, instead of simply slicing up a shrinking one. It’s really nothing more than unleashing the creative energies of people to invent, invest, employ, create and trade.

The Recipe for a Healthy Venezuela

A new government of Venezuela must restore the political framework of a pluralistic, constitutional republic—respect for the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary, freedoms of speech, press, and assembly, and the integrity of the electoral process.

It must root out corruption not only by removing the corrupt but also by closing the door to the granting of special favors by government itself. And it must restore order by shutting down paramilitary groups who use terror and intimidation.

In terms of the economy, a recovery agenda should include these pillars:

1. A Sound Currency

To bring a quick conclusion to hyperinflation and restore the confidence needed for savings and investment, stop the printing presses. No more paper Bolivars. Allow for choice and competition in the provision of money so people are free to use and make contracts in whatever media they see fit, including foreign and cryptocurrencies.

The government should redeem its own outstanding Bolivars in a new money rooted in real value. Options for achieving monetary stability include tying a new currency to a fixed weight of precious metal; dollarization, as successfully implemented in Ecuador and explained here by Dora de Ampuero, or introducing a currency board as recommended here by economist Steve Hanke.

2. Privatization

Venezuela needs a comprehensive de-nationalization. Businesses and industries owned by the state are corrupt, incompetent money-losers. They drain public funds at the same time they abuse the public. Selling them would bring new revenues to the Treasury and new life to the privatized firms. As Margaret Thatcher did with great success in Britain, give employees first chance at equity in formerly state enterprises before taking them public.

Start with the state-owned oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA). Few measures would send a stronger signal that Venezuela is opened for business than the sale of shares in PDVSA. It would prompt much-needed investment to improve the company’s decrepit infrastructure.

Lots of countries around the world leave the business of oil to the private sector and the ones that don’t are chronically beset with losses and outdated technology.

Don’t be afraid that people from other countries might buy equity in Venezuelan firms. They’re not likely to pack them up and ship them home. They will seek to make them profitable and create jobs and income for Venezuelans as they do so.

3. Property Rights

Seizure of property without compensation or exceptional justification should be outlawed.

A healthy, growing economy is impossible in the absence of property rights. People will not build wealth if it’s not safe from crime or confiscation. Venezuela must take measures to strengthen the individual right of property ownership.

In the International Property Rights Scorecard, the Chavez/Maduro kleptocracy ranked among the worst regimes in the world, as one can see here. The government’s ability to take property without restraint must be formally abolished. Citizens must gain the legal capacity to challenge government takings. Seizure of property without compensation or exceptional justification should be outlawed.

4. Education Reform

The state’s all-but-total monopoly on education must be abolished. Schools will never teach the principles critical to a free society such as personal character, entrepreneurship, respect for property, and democratic values if the state controls curricula or teacher-hiring or anything else. Make it easy for a pluralistic, multiple-option, choice-based educational system to develop.

If Venezuela dismantles socialism in other areas but leaves education socialized, it will undermine its new-found liberties over the long run.

In time, the bad ideas that helped to produce the disaster of the past two decades will take root again. Governments just don’t teach liberty, anywhere. Education is too important to a country’s future to turn it over to government. Put parents in charge.

5. Free Trade

Venezuela should declare itself a free trade zone. No (or very minimal) tariffs or other artificial barriers

DivineCouncil.org at the Center

DivineCouncil.org is devoted solely to spiritual matters as I believe the essence of human nature (and the origin of physical reality) is spiritual.

DivineCouncil.org is a fully-featured website with a regularly updated article blog, an infrastructure to distribute theological materials to a large subscriber base, and a private forum that could run a large church.

The private forum on DivineCouncil.org provides extensive resource-sharing capabilities. The forum, alone, could serve a large mega-church with dozens of ministries (in fact, many websites with such a forum devote the entire site to the forum.) However, DivineCouncil.org’s forum is devoted to sharing and distributing theological resources, supporting missionaries, and facilitating conversations searchable by keyword & category.

Private threads are also available on the forum for planning, article critique and collaboration, and for matters not appropriate to the entire forum readership.

In short, DC’s forum is everything Facebook is not.

What They Have in Common

There are three things that all three websites have in common: a course library, a private forum, and a store.

Course Library

Given that all courses, regardless of subject, will be housed on OutliersAcademy.com the categories for McGillespie.com and DivineCouncil.org will inevitably spill over to OutliersAcademy.com when courses become available in their respective areas of focus.

Private Forum

The forum on DivineCouncil.org is expensive and requires considerable administration. For that reason, I’ll be leveraging the forum to support OutliersAcademy.com and McGillespie.com, as well. Please see the bottom of the forum on DivineCouncil.org to discuss articles or courses related to OutliersAcademy.com and McGillespie.com.

Online Store

The “Store” button on the menu of all three websites will take you to the online store for that website.

The store was installed to make it possible to sell digital downloads without having to update expiring links for security. However, there are lots of possibilities I’m looking forward to exploring.

Life Admin & Web Cockpit

I have two large computer screens in my office formed into a kind of life-administering cockpit. Between logos, writing tools, and all sorts of apps and gizmos that make it easier (read possible) to administer life and three fully-blown websites there’s usually something interesting on the screen.

Every once in a while a friend is in my office to discuss something in private, and they see something on the screen that prompts them to ask what I’m working on. While answering their questions I become aware, again, how extensive is the infrastructure that keeps my life on track, websites administered, and materials published for their respective purposes.

Everything is Easy?

Far from complaining, I find my work to be thrilling and a joy. However, I also know something about websites that most people don’t: the “cockpit” and tools on my screen are similar or identical to those on the desks of thousands of other website administrators. There are many great choices for tools “out there”, but the best of the breed are usually obvious. Equally well-known is how many tools (dozens or more) are necessary to accomplish the work and still carry on something of a normal life. And those knee-deep in using them know something else that need rarely be mentioned or discussed: The oft-heard advice that “having a website is easy” or “just throw it up online” or “my friend makes $10k a month on his blog and does almost nothing” is worse than bad; it’s defeating and destructive.

Just recently, I learned of a good man who was lured into a one SAS-(software as service)-does-all program for administering the totality of his business website needs. As of 2019, no such automated service can fulfill this promise. Such a promise can only be made (let alone fulfilled) by an actual person (or persons) doing the work. Yes–even in 2019– actual people still have to do the grunt work to keep a good website going; piece-by-piece, update-by-update, integration-by-integration, codemod-by-codemod, glitch-by-glitch, support-call-by-support call.

Automations like drip marketing are awesome, spreadsheets can do wonders, google drive is cool as long as it’s free, and there are lots of great courses out there to help. My new favorite beast(s) are Zapier integrations to take the drudgery out of inter-app coordination!  But, don’t be fooled: there’s still a SWAMP of technology to wade through to keep everything in place for a functional website that fulfills its purpose well.

Pro Tip: Before you start a website for your business (or pay for an automated do-all-service) ask, beg, or purchase the advice on everything it really takes from someone already doing it. . . .successfully.

3 Websites for Life!

In retrospect, the unfolding of these three websites (over ten years) was natural and inevitable. Now with the “birth” of OutliersAcademy.com, I have the same feeling with regards to websites as when our second child was born. There is an indescribable feeling of “completeness of platform.”

In 2019, I’m more committed than ever to nourishing my family … and these three websites … for life!

I’ve spent the past two weeks coming up with a format to create and disseminate transcripts of video and audio materials I find important enough to have in text format.

With the proliferation of videos and podcasts, transcripts have become more useful in my work. As a writer and teacher, transcripts enable me to:

  • Skip long videos and podcasts (by reading or scanning them, instead.)
  • Search hundreds of videos, podcasts, or lectures by keywords.
  • Listen and read at the same time.
  • Come back up to speed quickly on an “old” video or podcast.
  • Quote the text without having to transcribe or retype.

I use DevonThink to store, scan, and search thousands of documents. Transcripts make videos, podcasts, & lectures available to that research workflow.

As each transcript is completed, I’ll make them freely available on either DivineCouncil.org (Spiritual) or McGillespie.com (Business, Family, Legal, Government, Health, Personal.)

Note: Each transcript (pdf) will be digitally signed by yours truly for web security. If you see my digital signature, you’ll know the document has not been altered from the signed original.

Few of the precious liberties so loudly decried as “Stolen!” are taken without consent. Most often, the responsible party’s name can be read aloud from the signature line of a contract. Such contracts spell out in explicit detail the terms in which the signatory’s liberties were voluntarily surrendered.

The three largest debt-contracts are the mortgage, car loan, and student loan.

Renting, driving a used car, and getting a degree online, are superior alternatives to the traditional debt-contract solutions. By deploying them, and paying cash for everything else, you’ll enjoy more liberty than the masters who sell debt-contracts as products to formalize the slavery of those who sign them.

Three Upgrades and Emancipation, Too

What’s better? To not be a slave, or to live better than the masters who seek to enslave you?

1 —Better Housing

The best second home is a hotel room anywhere you want to be. The best first home is a rental. Renters:

  • May live anywhere they want.
  • Can move at a moments notice.
  • Are not responsible for maintenance.
  • Don’t have to insure or replace what they don’t own.
  • Don’t pay property taxes.

There’s more, but that’s enough, for now.

2 — Better Cars

A new car loses 9% of its market value when you drive it off the lot. A year later, it’s lost 19%. By year three, the car has lost 42% of its “new” value.

If you have the cash, keep that 42% in your pocket or buy a better version of a 3-year-old car that someone else bought new. If you don’t have the cash, then save up to buy a four-year-old car for 49% of its original purchase price, or a five-year-old car for 60% off!

Better still, if you’re renting (see #1) move close to work where you don’t need a car for transportation.

3 — Better Education

If a college degree is good, then getting one twice as fast at 1/10th the cost is excellent. Or, get two online degrees in the usual four years for 20% of the cost of one. Or, get your bachelors and masters degree in four years for 90% off of each!

Best education of all: homeschool, GED out of high-school, get a degree (or two) online, figure out your purpose(s) in life and become an apprentice of some real-world masters. You’ll be engaged with life, in your teens, in ways your peers won’t be until their 40’s, if ever. You’ll even have a few degrees to show the weenies who think education is a membership rather than a transformation.

Delayed Gratification?

If you want to work a few decades in slavery, then the debt-free alternatives in this article would delay your gratification, forever.

If, however, you’d prefer to live fully engaged in your highest purposes the solutions in this article are light-speed travel in comparison with the norm.

Pay Cash or Don’t Buy

The solutions to the three largest debt-contracts come from a five-word rule-of-thumb principle: Pay cash, or don’t buy. By following this rule-of-thumb, all debt contracts are avoided, including the three largest described in the first solution.

Debt-Contracts are Products

Debt-contracts are not the cause of slavery. They’re products created to address the shortcomings of ignorance and a lack of determination to remain debt-free.

The Slave’s Problems are The Master’s Solutions (And Products)

Those who buy debt-contracts purchase their own slavery. The slave’s problems are the master’s solutions. They’re sold to the debtor to shortcut the personal development required to remain at liberty.

Liberty is purchased at the expense of the acquisition of knowledge of the debt-free alternatives to all such mechanisms of slavery.

Do you not know that, if you present yourselves to anyone as an obedient slave, you are a slave of the one whom you obey? — Romans 6:16

 

Atlas and Cyclopedia of Ireland
